2023 National Workshop on Data Science Education
Information about the upcoming workshop at UC Berkeley.
UC Berkeley's Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society, with support from Microsoft and the West Big Data Innovation Hub, is gearing up for the 2023 National Workshop on Data Science Education, to be held at UC Berkeley from June 20-23.
With data science courses expanding across institutions all over the United States, this is guaranteed to be an informative workshop. UC Berkeley is leading the charge in California with their Data 8 course material. At UCSB, Data 8 has provided a template for introductory Data Science courses (CMPSC 5A and CMPSC 5B), which are taught quarterly.
The vision for the 2023 conference is that it will be held in-person with an option to join and/or present online. In-person attendance will be limited to 75 people, with priority given to speakers and panelists. The online component will remain free and open to all.
On Tuesday (June 20), organizers will hold a set of presentations about offering Data 8-style fundamental courses. Attendees will get an opportunity to interact with Berkeley professors and student staff, attend office hours, learn about the process and intricacies of teaching Data 8 labs and discussions on Berkeley campus.
On Wednesday, organizers will host presentations about advanced data science classes like Data 101, 102, and 140, as well as panels and talks from other Californian Institutions.
On Thursday and Friday, organizers will host live panels on a variety of related topics of interest for Data Science Educators. The topics will include Human Context and Ethics in DS Education, Infrastructure and Tech support, teaching foundations of DS through non-DS classes, Project-Based Research Learning , High School DS outreach, and more. As last year, panels will be hybrid with online and in-person participation.
